Complete Power Restoration Could Take Up To One Week

BOSTON (CBS) – Tropical Storm Irene knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses across New England Sunday, and one official said it could be out as long as a week for some of those customers.

National Grid reported about 415,000 customers without electricity in Massachusetts as of 10:30 p.m Sunday.

WBZ-TV's Lauren Leamancyzk reports.

Most of the outages were in Bristol, Worcester, Norfolk, Middlesex and Plymouth Counties.

"What we've experienced so far and the fact that the storm is continuing, we expect that it's possible that the duration process could extend into next weekend," said Amy Zorich of National Grid.

NStar says it was dealing with 250,000 outages in Massachusetts Sunday evening. Western Mass. Electric reported an additional 8,400 outages.

Unitil had 2,700 customers without power in Massachusetts and at least 22,900 in New Hampshire.

Public Service of New Hampshire reported about 83,000 homes and businesses without electricity as of 8 p.m. Sunday.

Around 277,000 customers lost power in Rhode Island as of Sunday evening.
