LAWRENCE (CBS) – Lawrence is rehiring five police officers in an effort to combat the growing violence there, as evidenced by a particularly rough weekend.

This weekend, three people were stabbed, one woman slashed, and a firefighter bitten as Lawrence nightclubs let out and about 800 people swarmed the downtown area

In response Lawrence Mayor William Lantigua ordered five police officers to be reinstated.

The five were among a pool of 40 laid off last year

Talk about rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic…5 officers ain’t what they need. Send in the National Guard and ICE. THAT’S what they need !

Too late for ICE. The flood gates were open years ago and can’t be closed. It’s over. I worked in the downtown area 30 years ago and it was a pleasant experience. I went back 15 years later and couldn’t believe what I saw. I counted 11 empty store fronts alone, just on the north side of Essex St, between Lawrence St and Broadway. That city has turned into a real pit.
