Father Accused Of Shoplifting, Running Off Without His Baby

SOMERSWORTH, N.H. (CBS/AP) – Police say a man caught shoplifting from a supermarket ran off and left his 3-month-old daughter behind.

Twenty-one-year-old Matthew Sordiff appeared by video in court on Tuesday to answer for his actions and entered a not-guilty plea to charges including endangering the welfare of a child.

He allegedly stole about $20 worth of items from the Market Basket in Somersworth Monday afternoon.

When Sordiff was confronted by store management outside the store, police say he pushed his daughter's stroller at the manager and ran away.

WBZ-TV New Hampshire Bureau Chief Lauren Leamancyzk reports.

Employees took the baby back inside and called police. Sordiff was arrested a few hours later. The baby is now with relatives.

Sordiff, meanwhile, is being held behind bars on a $1,000 bail. He is not allowed to have any unsupervised contact with his daughter.
