SpyEye May Create Surge In Online Criminal Activity

BOSTON (CBS) – Cyber gangs who hack into computers and steal everything from personal information to money now have a new tool at their disposal.

It’s called SpyEye and already more than a dozen criminal cyber rings have started using it to send commands to tens of thousands of infected personal computers around the world.

Robert Siciliano is a cyber security expert.

He says, “Criminal hackers have modeled the same manufacturing and distribution as legitimate software companies, creating software hacking tools to compromise our network to crack into our online banking accounts.”

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Mike Macklin reports

More than two million computers are believed to have been infected already this year.

“If your PC is not properly protected with antivirus, if you’re using an outdated browser, then yes you very well could become vulnerable,” says Siciliano.

With no one policing the Internet, it’s web surfer beware.
