He passed away at his daughter's home in Stonington, Connecticut Sunday from a melanoma that spread to his lungs.
Kelly was sometimes confused with another marathon legend, John A. Kelly, a longtime runner who competed each year until 1992, when he was 84.
John J. Kelly was known as "Johnny the Younger." In addition to his win in 1957, Kelly finished second five times.
He was the only actual member of the Boston Athletic Association to win the race.
