Verizon Strike Ends With No New Deal

BOSTON (CBS) - The strike by Verizon workers is over.

Verizon spokesman Phil Santoro and a union spokesman announced Saturday afternoon that that the striking workers will go back to work under terms of the previous contract on Monday night.

WBZ-TV's Jim Smith reports


"Verizon and the unions have made headway in negotiating a number of local and regional issues, and the parties have agreed on a process for moving forward to negotiate the major issues regarding benefits, cost structure, work flexibility and job security," the company said in a statement.

45,000 wireline employees in Massachusetts and eight other states in the northeast and the District of Columbia had been on strike since August 7.

"Some issues, such as the medical, just can't be dealt with.  You see the country can't deal with it,"  I.B.E.W. 2222 represntative Ed Fitzpatrick told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

"The contracts will be extended with no specific deadline for achieving new collective bargaining agreements so that the parties can take the time required to resolve the critical issues," the Verizon statement said.
