Brady Sits As Patriots Open Preseason

BOSTON (CBS) - The New England Patriots opened their preseason Thursday night, with Tom Brady on the bench.

The reigning NFL MVP did not play against the Jacksonville Jaguars, with the Patriots opting to rest their star quarterback.

Well, it was not rest according to Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

"We didn't rest anybody. There were players that we wanted to see play, and we looked at them and we let them play," said Belichick after the 47-12 victory.

Backup Brian Hoyer got the start, going 15-for-21 with 171 yards and a touchdown. Third round pick Ryan Mallett played in the second half and finished 12-for-19 with 164 yards and a touchdown.

Brady has not missed a practice in training camp this season.
