Curious About Color Test

Posted by Ken Tucci, WBZ-TV

What happens if you don’t pass the color test when renewing your driver’s license? – Richard, Norton

You don’t get your license.  The state uses that test to make sure drivers can tell the difference between red, green and yellow traffic lights.

Has anyone failed that part of the test?  Is there anything you can do?

I have a friend who is color blind, and he has his license. He could not pass the color test, as he can’t see red or green, but when the inspector took him for his road test, he checked to see if my friend could see which light was lit, which he could. Since the lights always start with red at the top, yellow in the middle, & green at the bottom, he got his license because he could see the brightness & therefore knew what light was on.
