Hockey Fans Rejoice: Sean Avery Arrested

BOSTON (CBS) - So is it bad that I felt some level of satisfaction when I read this?

Sean Avery, arrested for pushing an officer of the law.

Deep breathe everyone... And now, exhale.

Ahh, relief.

If there is such a thing as karma, this would epitomize it. One of the least respected, sleaziest and most hated players in the entire league, Avery's resume would make Matt Cooke seem like a decent guy.

Eh, maybe that's a bit much, but you know what I mean.

The story, originally reported by TMZ, states that Avery was having a loud party at his home in the Hollywood Hills. After neighbors complained of the noise, police showed up at the hockey player's apartment around 1 am. When the officer knocked on the door it was opened by a disgruntled Avery, who proceeded to push the officer and shut the door in his face. When asked to come out a second time, Avery responded by saying "come back without your badges."

It took several minutes of back and forth before Avery opened the door for a second time. He was immediately arrested for assaulting a police officer.

I don't know about you, but this story makes me feel... great. It's hard to feel any sympathy for a guy who shows no dignity or respect for the game. If you need any convincing, just take a look at the track record.

In 2008, during a game against the New Jersey Devils, Avery turned to goaltender Martin Broduer during a powerplay and started waving his hands in front of his face. Who does that? The league was then forced to create "the Sean Avery rule" making that type of distraction illegal. Of course there was also the now infamous "sloppy seconds" comment he made in reference to Dion Phaneuf dating his ex-girlfriend.

And the list goes on from flopping to not fighting. Just watching the guy on the ice is irritating. Any player who agitates as much as he does and is unwilling to drop the gloves, loses all respect in my eyes.

So there it is. Can't say I didn't see this coming. With the way the man acts, none of this comes as a surprise. Hopefully there's some kind of lesson that Avery can draw from this that will translate to his on ice performance.

Unfortunately, I think it will further feed into his agitator ego and make him a more despised and hated individual.
