Mass. State Trooper Accused Of Assaulting Wife

TAUNTON (CBS/AP) -- A Massachusetts state trooper already facing embezzlement and drug charges is now accused of assaulting his wife.

Raynham police say Derrick Costa was arrested Thursday night at a relative's home on a charge of assault and battery for an alleged altercation with his wife earlier at their home.

Police say the 40-year-old Costa hit his wife in the face and the back of the head during an argument over money.

Costa told police he only touched his wife in an attempt to get away.

Costa failed to show for his arraignment on Friday and a default warrant for his arrest was issued.

State Police say Costa did not show up for his arraignment because he checked himself into Morton Hospital in Taunton after he was bailed from the Raynham police station overnight.

Taunton police took Costa into custody at the hospital, and was brought to the courthouse. He was being held on $5,000 cash bail.

A state police spokesman says Costa has been suspended without pay since June when the previous allegations came to light.
