Skateboarder Killed In Taunton Hit-And-Run

TAUNTON (CBS) - Police are looking for help tracking down a hit-and-run driver who killed a teenage skateboarder in Taunton.

17-year-old Nicholas Silva Thomas was skateboarding with a friend along Bay Street when he was struck at about 9:40 p.m. Thursday.

According to police, the driver turned off the car's headlights and left the scene, which is near the entrance to Watson Pond State Park.

Silva Thomas was rushed to Morton Hospital, where he died.

There is no word yet on what type of vehicle police are looking for.  His friend was not able to get a description of the car.

His grandfather Edwin Carlos said witnesses knew the driver was aware of what had happened.

"He turned the lights off after he hit him, because (a) woman was coming the opposite way and she saw the car."

Silva Thomas was going to be a senior at Taunton High School, where he was on the wrestling team.

Nick's friends showed up at the scene of the accident, carrying flowers.  "He was such a nice kid, always got along with everybody," said one classmate.  "He was always smiling and goofing around," said another.

His family said he and his friend would skate in the park on Thursdays and then go for pizza.

His aunt Cheryl Costa made a public plea to the driver Friday.

"Please don't be out there hiding, come forward," she said.
