Former State Auditor Pays Fine For Hiring Cousin
BOSTON (AP) — Former state Auditor A. Joseph DeNucci has agreed to pay $2,000 for hiring his cousin as a full-time fraud examiner.
The State Ethics Commission says DeNucci violated the state’s conflict of interest law when he gave his cousin Guy Spezzano a full-time job with a yearly salary of $40,545 and benefits.
According to an agreement signed by DeNucci outlining the events, the former auditor suggested to Spezzano that he apply for a job at the auditor’s office in January 2008.
Spezzano, who was unemployed at the time, began working at the office in June 2008 even though his job application was incomplete and he did not have the proper qualifications for the job.
Spezzano worked there until December 2009 when he began collecting sick benefits until April 2010.
