Crews Finish Installing 25,000 Support Straps For Big Dig Tunnel Lights

BOSTON (AP) -- Transportation officials have finished installing support straps on the 25,000 light fixtures in Boston's Big Dig tunnels as a safety precaution.

Two straps have been installed on every light fixture in addition the stainless steel clips that secure the 110-pound
fixtures.

The Department of Transportation says the straps were installed to prevent any lights from coming lose because of corrosion.

A corroded light fixture collapsed in February, prompting a system-wide inspection that revealed more corroded fixtures.

Earlier this month, a light fixture in one of the tunnels was replaced after it was found hanging dangerously from one side.

The straps are a temporary and are expected to be in place for 3 to 5 years while engineers develop a long-term solution to the corrosion.
