Hearing Held On Proposed Expansion Of Bottle Bill

BOSTON (CBS) - A hearing was held Wednesday on a proposed expansion of the bottle bill. Supporters held a rally to push for its passage.

The proposal would add a nickel deposit to more drink bottles like water and sports drinks.

About a hundred or so people gathered in front the State House to hear from those who support the updated bill.

Jim Hunt, Chief of Environment and Energy for the city of Boston,  says Mayor Menino backs the expanded plan, and not having a deposit on some bottles makes a mess of the city.

Nearly 200 cities and towns have passed resolutions supporting an updated bottle bill.

Supporters say it will save up to seven million dollars for communities on litter cleanup and disposal if passed.
