Cleaning Crew Finds Stun Gun On Jet Blue Plane From Boston
BOSTON (CBS/AP) - The FBI is investigating how a stun gun ended up onboard a Jet Blue plane.
Flight 1179 left Boston Friday night and landed in Newark, New Jersey safely just after 10 pm. Ninety-six passengers were onboard.
A cleaning crew discovered the stun gun after the flight in a seat-back pocket.
Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman told The Star-Ledger of Newark it's not clear who the weapon belonged to or how it got on the plane. Coleman says
there's no indication the weapon had been fired.
An FBI spokesman said Monday that it does not appear a stun gun was intended to be used in an attack.
Bryan Travers, a spokesman for the FBI's Newark office, said information from the investigation so far suggests that no attack was imminent. He would not detail why investigators think that.
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police removed the stun gun from the plane and handed it over to the federal Transportation Security Administration, which is responsible for screening passengers.
The investigation, being led by the FBI's office in Boston, is focusing on how the stun gun got onto the plane, Travers said.
"People get caught bring stuff to the checkpoint all the time," he said.
Travers said that by Monday morning it was not clear who may have brought the gun aboard.
JetBlue spokesman Sebastian White said the plane's next flight was delayed for a short period of time.
Flights used in the Sept. 11 attacks originated from Boston and Newark.
