Bruins Acquire Defenseman Joe Corvo From Carolina

BOSTON (CBS) -  The Boston Bruins have acquired defenseman Joe Corvo from the Carolina Hurricanes for a 2012 fourth round draft pick, GM Peter Chiarelli announced Tuesday.

The 34-year-old Corvo played in all 82 games in 2011 and tied career highs in points (40) and assists (29) to go with 11 goals. He is in the "puck-moving defender" mold the Bruins have long coveted.

"Joe's a player that has a lot of experience in this league," said Chiarelli on Tuesday. "He's a strong player, very good skater, very good shot."

"This came as a surprise to me and a very pleasant surprise," said Corvo on a conference call with the Boston media. "I'm very happy to be with a team that's coming off such an outstanding season and really hasn't made many changes at all. So I just think at this point in my career this is just an excellent opportunity to win, and to have the chance to win. And you know I couldn't be any happier."

The eight-year veteran has spent time with Carolina, Washington, Ottawa and Los Angeles, amassing 79 goals and 179 assists in 568 career games. Corvo has also played in 45 postseason games, totaling five goals and 13 assists.

He is happy to finally be suiting up with an original-six team though.

"I think it doesn't matter what original six team you play on, when you put that jersey on it's probably going to feel different if you haven't done it before, so I'm super excited about that," he said. "My impression of playing as a visitor in Boston is, the first thing you notice are the fans. The fans are super passionate about their team. The place is always jammed. It just seems like a great place to play. Like I said with the jersey, and it being an original Six its just going to make it that more special."

He was teammates with current Bruin Chris Kelly in Ottawa in 2007 when the Senators went to the Stanley Cup Finals. He also played with fellow-defenseman Dennis Seidenberg when the two were on the Hurricanes from 2007 to 2009.

Corvo was drafted in the fourth round in 1997 by the Los Angeles Kings.

Corvo wore number-77 in Carolina, so he will have to find a new number with the Bruins.
