Man Wanted In 2 States Surrenders After Standoff In Braintree

BRAINTREE (CBS) - A hostage situation in Braintree ended peacefully Sunday morning when the suspect gave himself up to police.

Braintree police said the incident started at 1 a.m. when 49-year-old Charles Diorio went to an apartment on Washington Street and somehow entered the home of a 46-year-old woman, his acquaintance.

Diorio took control of resident's licensed firearm and held her hostage until 5 a.m., when she got out and contacted police.

"We set up a perimeter on the apartment building behind me here, and brought our negotiators in, and they talked the individual into surrendering himself, and he was taken into custody," said Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins of the Braintree Police Department.

WBZ-TV's Alana Gomez reports.

No one was injured in the four-hour standoff.

Diorio allegedly committed assault with a dangerous weapon on Saturday night in Chelsea. He's also wanted in California for a parole violation, where he's a registered sex offender. In addition, Diorio had been convicted of raping and sodomizing a woman in New York City back in 1988.
