BOSTON (CBS) – Despite the gray skies and threat of some rain, the usual large crowd came to the Esplanade for Sunday night’s Boston Pops’ rehearsal for the 4th of July.

People lined up for hours for the rehearsal, but the real event is Monday night, where hundreds of thousands of people are expected to flood the city.

Country singer Martina McBride will join host Michael Chiklis and the Boston Pops on stage for the festivities. McBride is replacing Lionel Richie, who had to back out last week because of strained vocal cords.

McBride spoke to WBZ-TV about her opportunity:

“I was happy to get the phone call. I’m sorry for Lionel. I hope he feels better. My thoughts are with him, but this is just such an honor to be here. This event has been going on for 38 years and it’s obviously a beloved event for everyone in Boston,” McBride told WBZ-TV.

Chiklis, meanwhile, is thrilled with the opportunity to host the event he used to attend as a kid.

WBZ-TV’s Jim Armstrong spoke to Chikilis:

The other show that fans eagerly await, of course, is the enormous fireworks display.  Fifteen-thousand pounds of pyrotechnics will be set off from barges sitting in the middle of the Charles River.

It took designers six months to create the fireworks display and nine days to set it all up. All that hard work goes into a stunning 20-minute display.

You can watch the celebration on WBZ-TV beginning at 8 p.m., or listen to the festivities on WBZ NewsRadio 1030, beginning at 7 p.m.

I am sooo glad to see Michael Chiklis as the host this year!!

While I like Craig Ferguson on his show, I did not like his hosting of this event over the past few years.

    This show will be awesome!

A beautiful concert along with a magnificent fireworks display will overcome the sight of a bunch of idiots who will do anything to have their faces on television. Painted faces, absurd outfits and outlandish “dancing” done by those who have never done anything for the country they only celebrate once a year.
Take away the television cameras and half of them would never show up.

Dallas, here… bring back the whole Boston Pops show for the national networks! i can’t believe we’re going to miss the 1812 Overture because of program changesl love the Pops!!
glad Ferguson is off the show. it just didn’t seem right to have someone from the British Commonwealth (no offense meant) doing our Independence Day program. didn’t we fight them for this day? lol

With all due respect, Craig Ferguson is originally from Scotland, but is an American citizen–and has been one for the last few years. No one is prouder to be an American than he is, a fact you’d know if you watched his show. He’s a great entertainer, and I had no problem at all with him hosting the show. I hope he’ll return sometime in the future.

      Happy 4th everyone!!

Had to turn off the broadcast. Could not stand Jack WIlliams hosting. So pompous! Totally ruined the broadcast. Lisa was good though.

The spectacular was SPECTACULAR … PROBABLY THE BEST YET!!
The orchestra was awesome as usual. My favorite of the guests were the US Army Field Band and Soldiers Chorus. They brought such professionalism to the stage and each of their performances were amazing. What they gave to Stars and Stripes Forever was truly stellar.
I was very disappointed that when Michael Chiklis took over as MC at t he end, he totally ignored the fact that were part of the performance …. thanking everyone else, but not the Band and Chorus. This happened 2-3 times. Disgraceful! He should write an apology!
