54 Boston EMTs Suspended In Training Fraud Scheme

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Fire Department has suspended 54 firefighters who were among more than 200 EMTs statewide investigators say faked medical training certifications.

The department announced the punishments on Thursday following a yearlong internal investigation.

Two instructors were accused in 2010 of falsifying records for 213 emergency medics, at times giving credit for training classes that never took place.

The certifications ranged from basic refresher courses to advanced cardiac life support cards.

The subsequent investigation found that 20 of the 54 firefighters twice received falsified certifications, and they garnered 45-day suspensions without pay.

Those who did it once received 15-day suspensions without pay.

Please tell me why these people were not FIRED!! This was not an oversight. This was not a mistake. These firefighters planned and cheated in order to keep their jobs. Please do not tell me that the “Union” contract allows this type of behavior. And the “idiots” that got away with it the first time….did it again because they could.. This is no different than stealing.

    1. Matt says:

Because their unions would not allow them to be fired.

Names? Where is the list of Names????

    1. Frauds says:

      Agree. Name these people.

  3. Sue says:

I thought EMTs took pride in their ability to save lives. Many EMTs do….what about the others? Risking peoples’ lives so they won’t have to pay a fee??

  4. Michael says:

Whenever a City or Town Fire Department lobby to take the contract away from the Private EMS Company you always hear the same argument. “We are better trained” All EMT’s receive the same training and certification Statewide. However you can see why now they are better trained on paper. They cheated, lied and deceived. I’m getting older now. Was an EMT in the 80’s. If there comes a time I need an Ambulance I certainly hope it isn’t one run by the Fire Department.

I think the E.M.T’s, Paramedics, and the trainers, and/or company that “gave” the Training should all be named. They all conspired to decieive the public, as well as comitting theft. I also was an E.M.T in the 80’s and 90’s and we had pride in our work.

The average taxpaying citizen is unaware of how difficult firefighters have become to deal with. Those that work in Public Safety do know. They are forever trying to justify their existence and in so doing have created a multitude of issues for municipalities during these tough times. This is another example that they are much more than the nice guys who get cats down out of trees. I would advise any city/town, large or small to investigate every aspect of their Fire Department.

  6. bruce says:

Would anyone like to place a bet that these scammers were reimbursed by the towns for the class expenses….travel, fees, lunch!!!

  7. Audit says:

Someone should check their Federal and State tax returns….anyone think that they took the deduction for job related expenses?

  8. Cinque says:

While not the same, I am reminded of the Boston firefighters who wanted to maintain their own equipment so they could make extra money. That was just fine until one of their trucks rolled down a hill due to poor maintenance which resulted in the death of one of their brothers. Was it worth it?

  9. taxedout says:

Another Sham…Try this on the outside and you’d be out of a job Fast!!!

  10. Raven says:

Keep in mind… These are NOT Boston EMS emts…. These are not the ambulance folks you see doing this… It’s the guys in the big red trucks.

    1. Michael says:

They are still EMT’s who by the way arrive at the scene at times before the ambulance

    2. blackbear1 says:

You are so very correct Raven. You have it right. You seem to know how it works.

  11. johnqpublic122 says:

Raven you are right…The “ambulance folks” are to busy taking prostitutes into thier department truck and getting caught taking cocaine to fake thier recertification. Well at least those type of idiots get fired with EMS…..oh, waite I forgot….they get promoted….my fault
