Coast Guard crews searched a total of 180 square miles off Mashpee for nearly 24 hours.

MASHPEE (CBS) – The Coast Guard called off its search for a missing young man off Cape Cod Wednesday afternoon.

21-year-old Daniel Andrade of East Falmouth was last seen taking a boat to Popponesset Island Tuesday morning.

The trip should have taken about an hour.

The 17-foot Boston Whaler was found about four hours later driving in circles with no one on board near the island.

Andrade works for the Little River Boat Yard in Mashpee.

“It’s disappointing that we weren’t able to bring him home to his family … it’s always hard to come back empty-handed,” Chief Petty Officer Brian Guarino said in a statement Wednesday.

Coast Guard crews searched a total of 180 square miles for nearly 24 hours.

“We’ve thrown everything we can at it and we haven’t been able to locate him,”  Petty Officer Connie Terrell told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.
