Convicted DiMasi Could Lose State Pension

BOSTON (CBS) – Former Massachusetts House Speaker Sal DiMasi could lose his state pension.

DiMasi was convicted on federal corruption charges Wednesday and now State Treasurer Steve Grossman says he will ask the State Retirement Board to suspend DiMasi's pension, which pays him about $5,000 a month.

"He has been convicted of a crime related to his office or his position and because he has been convicted, I believe that we should suspend his pension benefits and move forward with forfeiture proceedings," Grossman told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Friday.

DiMasi's pension was suspended when he was first charged, but a judge overruled the decision and forced the state to pay him back.

DiMasi will be sentenced September 8.

He's planning to appeal.
