2 Teens From Lawrence Shot, Killed During Florida Home Invasion

HAVERHILL (CBS) - Two teens gunned down in Florida will be returning to Lawrence for burial this week.

Kiara Brito, 16, and her 13-year-old brother Jeremi were shot in the head last Sunday during a home invasion in Tampa, Florida. They moved there from Lawrence five years ago with their mother Judy, who was moving in with her boyfriend.

Vicent Caminero is devastated about the death of his grandchildren.

"The mom is destroyed. He just spoke over the phone with her and her his biggest fear is that she will harm herself," said Caminiero's translator.

WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports.

Police said 18-year-old Tavari Grant has been charged with their killings. He is also believed to have been trying to rob the house where Jeremi and Kiara were killed.

"(Judy's) biggest thing was for her kids to have an education. She wanted the best for them," said Caminiero's translator.

Vincent said his grandchildren were special. Kiara was a good student and captain of her basketball team.

"She loved to play basketball and she had been given a scholarship to college to play basketball," said Caminiero's translator.

Jeremy, meanwhile, loved to ride bikes and was always willing to help others.

"As a grandfather it's devastating that he was able to see Jeremi at the hospital with a gunshot wound in his head."

Vincent said his daughter Judy was not home when her two children were murdered.
