Wheel Of Misfortune

After some sizzling weather on Wednesday and Thursday, it was much cooler today with temperatures actually falling from 61-66 early this morning to 57-61 by early this afternoon as the rain became more widespread. If you enjoyed today’s weather, chances are high that you will be happy with the next 4 days. The evolving pattern portends a lengthy stretch of dank, damp conditions with periodic rain of varying intensity. A weak wave of low pressure developing just south of Long Island early this evening will track to Cape Cod by early tomorrow morning. A swath of showers blossoming over Connecticut and the South Coast will impact much of the area overnight. Additionally, another ribbon of rain shifting eastward from NY will prolong the rain to about 7-9am.  Some thunderstorms might rumble across mainly the Cape and southern Plymouth County late tonight and early tomorrow morning. Once this shield of rain shifts offshore in the morning, I only expect a few spotty sprinkles and patches of mist drying up but not followed by any clearing. The overcast could brighten but breaks are unlikely in most places as low-level moisture remains locked in. Consequently, the temperatures can only raise a few degrees from the middle 50s to the upper 50s to near 60 degrees except over Cape Cod where 60s are likely due to the proximity of the warm sector associated with the wave disturbance.

Meantime, an upper level low pressure system over the upper Great Lakes is going to shift southeastward. Within its circulation, minor perturbations are spinning. One of these will trigger a swath of showers and boomers in NY late tomorrow afternoon and these will proceed eastward across New England tomorrow evening. As the upper air low continues to dig into New England, its energy supply will initiate surface storm development offshore. Initially, a dry tongue will enable some sunshine Monday morning followed by scattered afternoon showers and possible boomers. After that, spiral bands of rain and mist from this system will be steered into the region on Tuesday and Wednesday by this wheel of misfortune. As a result, after highs of 65-70 on Monday, with a moist onshore flow, I doubt that temperatures will reach or exceed 60 degrees especially in eastern New England on Tuesday and Wednesday with nighttime lows in the lower 50s. The northeasterly wind will freshen at times to 12-25 mph along the coast. Presently, it appears that an upstream kicker system will shove the wheel offshore enabling a return of drier air and a ridge of high pressure on Thursday. Once that sun pops out, it will quickly warm to the middle to upper 70s except along the coast. However, that kicker system will arrive too quickly and produce showery rains and possible thunder Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. This forecast is undoubtedly upsetting and disappointing for many but the one good thing about this pattern is that no severe weather can be generated unlike the atmospheric setup that cranked out nasty damaging thunderstorms and tornadoes of the past two weeks. I, for one, am pleased that we have a break from that mean weather.

Joe Joyce delivers his latest AccuWeather Forecast in the morning and I shall return later in the day.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

    Thanks Barry.

Hooray. NE is the pits! Why do we put oursleves through this ever year? This week starting today looks an awful lot like the last week in May. God awful. If you live near the coast you are toast all of June with no hope of a nice weekend. Enjoy the summer. WInter will be here in October

  • Wanting warm weather

Another summer without a summer. 2009 all over again. This truely stinks. June is becoming one sorry month. Summer around her now consist of 3-4 weeks in july and a couple weeks in August, thats it. If I didnt have to live here, I’d be so outa here your head would spin. My 2 kids are now out of school and want the beach, pool, and nice weather. After last winter, i still have to tell them, sorry, we cant go out. Anybody who likes this stuff can bite me! Summer with out a summer, AGAIN!!!!

  • southshoretom

Thanks for the update Barry !! I can understand the frustration of losing summer days to cool and damp weather, since we dont have a long stretch of warmth at this latitude….. I just dont think its going to be quite as bad as the summer of 2009 this year, and even that summer, I recall a warm to hot stretch in mid August that helped offset all of the rainy. cool weather of June and July.

  • Wanting warm weather

2 weeks of warm weather offsets 2 months of junk? Your’e nuts. NE is the pits.
    2009 all over again.

  • Wanting warmer weather

I’d rather live in north carolina or georgia. At least they have summer.
And, if there’s even a hint of a model for this kind of junk, ole Barry is gonna go with it since for some reason he likes this. Earth the Barry, move to Alaska. Some of us like summer. I know opinions dont shape the weather, but your WANTING this weather is pretty upsetting to a lot of us. Please keep it to yourself.

  • Italo

I have a balcony that I’ve had a chance to go out onto and sit on, between surgery recuperation and going back to work, just about exactly 2 times since the beginning of April. It’s just frustrating because this best, longest time of the year rushes by so fast, in just a few weeks. I wouldn’t mind so much personally, but then I think of what we have to once again go through after summer’s over (hint, hint: Think last winter from hell!) before we get a chance to return to the warm season next year. I give up: the Bruins and Canucks should just play outside in Boston next game–the ice would probably not melt too much! lol Stay dry!

  • boston weather sucks

This is Barry’s favorite weather, he actually thinks this is good weather, this sucks for tourism and economy, Hey Barry move to upstate Main and take this garbage with you please. Ah, by the way, the NOAA and others clear things up by Wednesday, so this is just your wish. It is sucks that it is in 80′s in NYC by Monday, and sucks here only.

  • Andrea

Ok, I’m freaking out here! At one point last winter, we did not tilt the snowblower chute up high enough, and we were without a place to put new snow. It was at that point I sat down and almost cried. The only thing that kept me going was thinking of Eastham beach days, and how perfect they are. The ccns is my slice of heaven. Please, everybody, let’s pray for summer. I can’t handle another 2009 – I’ll need therapy for sure. Help!

  • southshoretom

Hang in there Andrea. Plenty of good beach days coming this summer on Coast Guard Beach ! Looking forward to the Eastham area later this summer myself.

  • southshoretom

I hear you ! If by July 31, it is the same as 2009, I will be the first one to say I was wrong. Blocks, this late in spring, are normal, in my opinion. 2009 was extremely unusual. I think the warm to hot weather will be back after June 20th and that July will be close to normal tempwise with precip only coming from convection related to cold frontal passages.

  • southshoretom

Hope you are well Italo ! Hmmmmm….summer hockey outside at Fenway Park sounds good to me !! Lets hope the Bruins are headed back to Vancouver for a game Wednesday !

  • Barry Burbank

Hey Folks… I love summer when it’s bright and sunny and 73-83 degrees with low humidity… beautiful for outside sports and work activities… I just despise the 85-95 and high humidity days. On the flip side, I am not going to get upset about a few cool rainy days either. BTW, this summer will not even come close to matching the summer of ’09… be grateful you weren’t in the path of the June 1 tornado!!!!

  • Novice

I feel the same way as Barry. I don’t like triple H, I don’t even like double H (if there is such a jargon). Honestly, if I have to choose between the summer of 2009 and the summer of 2002, I’ll take 2009.

  • JimmyJames

Barry great blog as always. It is not the best weather right now but it beats 3H weather. Mid 70s to low 80s is the perfect summer temperature for me with low humidity.

  • southshoretom

Yes, I’ll agree with that as well JJ

  • Hate rain

No, it does not beat tiple H. Not by a mile. You have 3 months of potential hot and nice weather up here. THATS IT!!! If you dont like hot and humid AT ALL, move to northern Maine.
Do none of you people have school age kids who like the pool and the beach? Sounds like you’re all old fossils and have no air conditioning.

  • JimmyJames

I have air conditiong and I am in my 20s so I don’t think I am an old fossil. I like warm weather but I hate when its hot and having to run an ac and not being able to open the windows and let the fresh air in. As I have said many times on this blog I am a winter and fall person.

  • southshoretom

Lol !! A/C….check !….. school age kids, check ! …who, I might add were in the pool today, warmed by all the sunny, warm weathet of the last 2 to last 3 weeks. I think when we get to Labor Day weekend, we will have had 10 to 14 90F days and a bunch of 80F days that will have everyone thinking this was a normal summer temp wise.

  • Italo

Hey there southshoretom, you too..! What a game last night, huh? Somehow I get this feeling that they are gonna do it! But I keep saying that about the warm weather coming, too, so maybe I better just turn the switch off on my brainwaves on that one for now! ;)

  • Hadi

Thanks Barry! I also agree that no way does this summer resemble 2009. Hang in there people summer hasnt even started yet. I for one love summer as well, but not too hot either.

  • David White

Thanks Barry and everyone for your comments. Think the spell we had from June 2-7–beautiful! Maybe we shall get many more of these this summer, hopefully not bookended by severe weather, but enough showery activity to water the lawns and gardens and keep the brooks, ponds, and reservoirs from lowering too much.

  • Matt Souza

All i am going to say is that it better be back to that 80 + and sunny weather by the end of the week and stay. summer vacation is starting and i want to do summer activities not be in the house ……
