Lawrence Community Builds Playground In One Day

LAWRENCE (CBS) -- Students at Arlington Elementary school are celebrating the accomplishment of a single day: a new playground.

Three hundred volunteers built the playground in just one day Thursday.

Assistant principal Maureen Duerr said the planning started in the fall when the school received a Promised Neighborhood grant.

"We were in Washington,D.C., sitting around a table, saying 'What does the Arlington neighborhood need?'" she said.  "And my first thing was, our kids need a place to play."

Duerr gives credit to the New Balance Corporation and kaBoom, as well as community volunteers.

"Without our community, we wouldn't have been built," she told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

This is a neighborhood that didn't have a decent playground.  Now they've got a great one, and the kids are psyched.

"The playground was awesome.  I think I've got to do the jungle gym," one student said.
