Fresh Grocer: Tomatoes, Cherries, And Peppers

BOSTON (CBS) - With summer unofficially under way, it's the perfect time for fresh produce.

The Fresh Grocer Tony Tantillo looks at this week's best buys in the produce section:  Bing cherries, hothouse tomatoes and red and yellow peppers.

Watch The Fresh Grocer:

When shopping for cherries, keep in mind that the darker the fruit, the better.  The average price for Bing cherries is around $4.99 per pound.

If you're still waiting for your own garden tomatoes to grow, hothouse tomatoes from the grocery store are the closest you can get to backyard freshness, for an average price of $1.99 per pound.

A pound of red and yellow field peppers could have cost you up to $6.99 only a few weeks ago, but prices are dropping as summer heats up, with the peppers now averaging at $2.99 per pound.

You can watch Tony weekdays at noon on WBZ-TV.
