State Trooper Seriously Hurt In 2003 Crash Dies

BOSTON (CBS) – A State Trooper seriously injured by a drunk driver nearly eight years ago has died.

Trooper Ellen Engelhardt was on duty when she was hit by a drunk driver in Wareham in July 2003.

No details of her death have been released.

In a statement, State Police Colonel Marian McGovern said Engelhardt has been an inspiration to her colleagues.

"Trooper Engelhardt loved the Massachusetts State Police, and the job loved her back. Our thoughts are with her daughter Lora and the rest of her family and loved ones."

Engelhardt was in the break-down lane on Route 25 in Wareham checking guard rail damage when her cruiser was struck by then-20-year-old William Senn of Wayland.

Senn, who had been drinking at a party, was sentenced to two-and-a-half-years in jail.
