MBTA Opening Online Gift Store

BOSTON (CBS) – The MBTA is looking to pull in some extra money with a new online store, MBTAgifts.com.

A wide range of items will be sold on the site.

"T-shirts and coffee mugs to refrigerator magnets with your favorite stops on them," MBTA general manager Richard Davey told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Tuesday.

"Even a shower curtain, if you can believe that, of the entire system map. So, if you're getting ready in the morning, you can figure out which line you're going to use."

"We actually took old tokens and converted them into cufflinks and also a pin you could wear and some other items. So, there's definitely a wide variety. We also have original old subway signs which go also for a hefty price."

Ward Maps of Cambridge is contracted to run the store, which will officially open Wednesday. The T will receive royalties from the licensed MBTA merchandise sold on the site.

"This costs the T nothing," Davey said.

"We know that some – London and New York – have probably two of the most successful stores and those raise around $1 million a year. I think that would be extraordinary if we could achieve that mark. I don't expect to achieve that."

Will people really buy this stuff?

Davey hopes so.

"I think a lot of customers have good stories about the T," he said

"It's become part of their life to some extent, and as opposed to just some average old road sign, you may fondly remember the first stop you got on for your first job. I think for some folks they won't be interested and that's o-k."
