Shrewsbury Police Officer Hit While Working Traffic Detail

SHREWSBURY (CBS) -- A Shrewsbury police officer was hit and seriously injured Monday night while working traffic control on Main Street.

Officer Brian Gerardi, 59, was taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester after an SUV hit him.

Authorities say Gerardi was directing traffic at the exit of St. John's High School after Arch Bishop Desmond TuTu spoke. At 10:20 p.m., Mary Degemmis-Shusta, 56, of Princeton, was driving out onto Main Street when she hit Gerardi.

Officers say Gerardi was wearing issued reflective equipment and using a flashlight when he was hit and fell to the ground.

Degemmis-Shusta was not injured. Authorities did not say whether she will face any charges.
