Report Ranks Boston The Safest City For Pedestrians

BOSTON (CBS) - A new study ranks Greater Boston the safest metropolitan region for pedestrians.

The report by Transportation For America listed the Greater Boston area at the bottom of its "Dangerous Cities" list, meaning the region is actually the most pedestrian-friendly in the country.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Bernice Corpuz reports.

One reason for that is the way the streets are designed, according to John Walkey of Transportation For America.

"But when we look around the state at where pedestrian deaths are occurring, they are on major arterials that are similar to the situation in places like Tampa, St. Pete. You've got roads that are designed for cars without people in mind," said Walkey.

He added that despite the report, there are still some dangerous intersections in the city, including on Washington and Columbus Avenue. He suggested that the roads in Boston may be even safer if pedestrian lights stayed on longer.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens spoke to pedestrians in the city.

From 2000-2009, 483 pedestrians were killed in Greater Boston.

The Greater-Orlando metro area was the most dangerous for pedestrians, according to the report.
