To make room for Sutton on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated utility outfielder Daniel Nava for assignment.
The moves come one day after the Red Sox signed pitcher Kevin Millwood to a minor league contract and traded for Colorado reliever Franklin Morales. To make room for Morales, Boston designated Hideki Okajima.
