Passenger Accused Of Steering MBTA Bus Into Oncoming Traffic

BOSTON (CBS) - Police arrested a man after he allegedly attempted to steer an MBTA bus into oncoming traffic on Tuesday night.

The driver told police that 52-year-old Donald Lyons approached the front seat, reached over with both hands, and took over the steering wheel while they were driving on Chestnut Hill Avenue after 7 p.m. He turned the wheel left, causing the bus to veer into oncoming traffic.

The driver said she managed to apply the emergency brake and stop the bus without hitting any moving vehicles or parked cars.

Soon after, the driver helped officers locate Lyons down the street on Commonwealth Avenue. He was arrested and charged with assault and battery on a public employee and wrongful interference with operation of an MBTA vehicle.

The driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
