Dice-K Could Be Facing Lengthy Stay On DL

BOSTON (CBS) - Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka's stay on the disabled list could last a lot longer than two weeks.

The Red Sox righty will not throw a baseball for the next two weeks, and is expected to miss at least a month.

There is the chance Matsuzaka will need to undergo Tommy John surgery, shelving him for the rest of the season.

"His examination is consistent with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament, and strain to his common flexor mass," Red Sox doctor Thomas Gill said in a team-released statement. "An MRI was obtained which confirmed these exam findings.  He will be re-examined in two weeks."

Not every sprained UCL leads to Tommy John Surgery, but this is not good news for Matsuzaka or the Red Sox.

Matsuzaka experienced tightness in his elbow in his last start on May 16 against the Orioles. He was pulled in the fifth inning after surrendering five runs off five hits and seven walks.
