Hazmat Situation At Tip O'Neill Building In Boston

BOSTON (CBS) -- Hazardous materials teams responded to the Tip O'Neill Federal Building on Causeway Street next to the TD Garden in Boston Tuesday afternoon.

Federal agents sounded alarms in the basement after at 4:10 p.m. when their portable radiation detectors indicated there were high levels of radiation in the area.

WBZ has confirmed that a piece of surveying equipment in the basement of the building has leaked radiation.

The basement and immediate area were evacuated. People at a daycare facility on the fourth floor were not evacuated, but were pushed to the back of the building.

WBZ-TV's Jim Smith reports from the scene.

Officials say they've shut down the air ventilation to keep the vapors from spreading.

Officials say there is no immediate danger despite the fact that firefighters declared it a level three incident, which is the most serious level.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Bernice Corpuz reports.

At least two federal police officers were exposed to the radiation. They have been cleared and do not need to be decontaminated.
