Hiring Of College Graduates Up

BOSTON (CBS) -- Over the next few weeks millions of students will be graduating college and looking for jobs.

According to a study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, college graduate hiring is up 19 percent over last year.

WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports

Branden Getchell is graduating from Boston College and will start working at Hill Holiday on June 6 as an assistant account executive on the Bank of America team.

"He's special very smart, hard working, and what sets him apart is that he is ready for anything," said Hill Holiday president Karen Kaplan.

Getchell had interned there while in school and says it's that and his work ethic that helped him land the job.

"My first summer I did well, but the second summer I wanted to do better. I won intern of the week. So my performance progressed," he said.

Lou Gaglini, associate director of employer relations at Boston College, says internships have become the new entry level. "It's a great way for students to get a foot in the door and gives them visibility to organization," he said.

The average student in this year's class is nearly $23,000 in debt.
