RI Gay Marriage Supporters Rally For More Rights

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (CBS/AP) - Supporters of legalizing gay marriage in Rhode Island gathered at a Statehouse rally Tuesday to protest the decision by Democratic House Speaker Gordon Fox to introduce a bill to legalize civil unions instead.

Fox last week announced he was abandoning a push to pass gay marriage legislation this year. Fox, who is gay, said the legislation has "no realistic chance" of passing the General Assembly this year.

Gay marriage supporters Marriage Equality Rhode Island say civil unions would not provide the same rights as marriage. They gathered at the Statehouse to protest what they call a backroom deal with the Senate.

The Senate was seen as the stumbling block for passage of a gay marriage bill.
