Some Locals Excited About Pope John Paul II's Beatification

BOSTON (CBS) - Cardinal Sean O'Malley is in Rome for the beatification of Pope John Paul II, which occurred Sunday.

Many parishioners said they were excited about the former Pope's beatification.

"He was just a special man. There's something about him that made me have a lot of faith. He did a lot for the church. He was just special," said one woman.

Paul Kellan, who has been holding vigil outside the church on behalf of clergy abuse victims, doesn't think the beatification is warranted.

"I'm a little shocked to tell you the truth. Maybe we need a Patron Saint for the cover-up, because that, I think, is gonna be the major legacy he's gonna leave us," said Kellan, a Medford resident.

The kneeler Pope John Paul II used during his 1979 visit to Holy Cross Cathedral is on display at the front of the church.
