BOSTON (CBS) – Cardinal Sean O’Malley is in Rome for the beatification of Pope John Paul II, which occurred Sunday.

Many parishioners said they were excited about the former Pope’s beatification.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Kim Tunnicliffe reports.

“He was just a special man. There’s something about him that made me have a lot of faith. He did a lot for the church. He was just special,” said one woman.

Paul Kellan, who has been holding vigil outside the church on behalf of clergy abuse victims, doesn’t think the beatification is warranted.

“I’m a little shocked to tell you the truth. Maybe we need a Patron Saint for the cover-up, because that, I think, is gonna be the major legacy he’s gonna leave us,” said Kellan, a Medford resident.

The kneeler Pope John Paul II used during his 1979 visit to Holy Cross Cathedral is on display at the front of the church.

I’m Catholic, church going and all that, but dare I say that the beatification of John Paul 11 is just a slap in the face to all those sex abused victims and their families. One must remember that it was under this man’s reign that a lot of this sex abuse took place, and all John Paul did was look the other way. Now maybe he didn’t know, didn’t care, or was just plain incompetent to deal with it, but never the less it’s an embarrassment to all catholics especially here and in Ireland, and I don’t care what Bishop O’Mally or anyone else has to say about it. Big mistake once again coming from the Vatican.

Ellen, I agree, and no matter who MAN appoints to sainthood, it will be God who decides who His saints truly are, not the Catholic church.

  2. Patrick O’Malley says:

Catholics are so desperate. John Paul II was the pedophile priest’s pope. It’s disrespectful and disgusting to the 100,000+ children worldwide that were raped by their local priest that this is going on.

If he was a good man, he would have stopped the world the first time heard about a child being raped by a priest, and would have investigated it. He would have gotten unlimited help for all of the children, even if it meant that his Catholic Corporation lost money. He would have shown the world that telling the truth, doing the right thing, and helping children was more important than money and big buildings.

Sadly, he didn’t, and more sadly, he taught Catholics that child rape really isn’t that big of a deal. He better bring some of those high priced Catholic lawyers to help him get into heaven.
