Charlestown Mom Gives Birth At Home During Bruins Game
BOSTON (CBS) - Like a lot of us, a Charlestown couple was watching the Bruins game last Thursday night.
Suddenly, the wife's water broke, and their newborn daughter came out in a hurry.
Only two days old, Caroline Hafer made an exciting entry into the world.
WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports.
Suzanne Hafer says her baby was born on Thursday night, one day after her due date. But, the happy couple never made it to the hospital. They were at home watching the Bruins game, when all of a sudden her water broke.
"I barely made it down the stairs and I knew this baby was coming. I said to my husband, who was pulling the car around, and I said 'You need to call 911,'" said Suzanne.
Husband Zach has no medical training whatsoever. So, he had to improvise. He grabbed the yoga mat and some clean towels, and within 16 minutes, precious Caroline was born into the world on their living room floor.
The 911 dispatcher talked Zach through the entire birth.
"He kept saying this one thing, 'Stabalize the head and make sure there is nothing around the neck,'" said Zach. "And when she came out and I was holding her, I tried to wrap her up."
Moments later, paramedics arrived and took over.
"My husband was cool as a cucumber. Thank God, because I was the opposite," said Suzanne.
"I think at the time I was so distracted and sort of in shock," said Zach.
Young Caroline is a very healthy 8 pounds, 9 ounces.
Her older sister Leah kept Suzanne in labor for 40 hours, which is why she thought she had more time to get to the hospital.
