HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, a swingman on Connecticut’s national championship basketball team, has been arrested on a marijuana possession charge.
Campus police say the sophomore from Dorchester, Mass. was arrested Thursday night along with two people at Merritt Hall, a campus dormitory.
“During the course of the investigation, officers found Jamal Coombs-McDaniel and two other individuals in possession of 5.6 grams of marijuana, a marijuana grinder and a package of cigars used to smoke marijuana,” according to the police report.
Coombs-McDaniel was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on a $500 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Rockville Superior Court on May 5.
He was one of 11 people arrested during the first night of Spring Weekend, an annual weekend of campus parties before final exams.
Coombs-McDaniel played in all 41 of UConn’s games during its national championship season, and started twice. He averaged 5.6 points and 2.7 rebounds.
He is a favorite with the UConn student section, which breaks into a chorus of “Cooombs” when he scores.
“We are aware of the arrest of Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, but beyond that have no further comment at this time,” said Kyle Muncy, a spokesman for the basketball program.

Sorry to hear that. We must lower our expectations of people to be rolemodel’s. Doe’s he hve a legal prescription forit? Why was he,caught smoking? What did he do to cal attention, beside smoke pot.?IsMerritt Hall named after George merritt, the Actor? If,so he is my Cousin. George Merrritt married my Cousin Bobbie Merritt.

Maybe if we stop putting sports celebrities on a pedastal and looking to them as “role” models, we won’t be so surprised when they’re caught doing what everyone else seems to be doing.

I hate to be a downer, but is affirmative action and free rides making a difference. Has anyone noticed how many black athletes have been arrested over the last few years on drug charges?

  5. DrStrangelove says:

Without bringing race into it, we could also break things down further, if you really want to get punitive: Is he from the city? How many kids does he have? Is he from a single-parent family? Does he live in an apartment? Was he given a free ride through HS? etc… etc… Simply put, this is a DUMB kid who has no business being in college. UCONN, and schools like it, are notorious for accepting low-level idiot athletes simply to up the ante of money coming into their schools. I give this kid a lot of credit that it was just weed. UCONN and Eastern CT State are in the heart of Heroinville. Could’ve been a lot more serious.

To answer your question DRSTRANGELOVE. He grew up in Dorchester, MA in a single family home with BOTH his parents. He has NO kids. He was privilege to attend Private Schools with his parents footing the bill. So if you have any further questions please contact me directly. Further more he does not now and has never smoked weed.

      Sincerely DUMB KIDS DAD
