Grocery Shopping At Stop & Shop Via The iPhone

BOSTON (CBS) -- Starting Monday shoppers at Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts will be able to use their iPhones as a self checkout device.

Currently the stores offer their scanner guns to customers to use as self checkout devices, but now Modiv Media of Quincy has developed an iPhone application to take the place of the store's devices.

"Instead of being a device that the store purchases and you borrow it happens to be your device," Paul Schaut of Modiv Media told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

The apps will work at the stores in Braintree, Quincy and Plymouth with the intention of adding more stores throughout the year. Schaut explains when shoppers get to the store they can check in and with your phone scan items going into your grocery cart. Currently the app is only supported by iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

"When you're done you check out just as you would check out in the normal self check out lane without having to rescan your items," said Schaut, adding that the new app will get customers out of the store faster.

He also said as shoppers use the app they'll know the total of what they're buying as they shop and they will get specials just for them.

"You're given targeted offers that are only for you because the system knows what you've been buying in the past year, and the system knows where you are in the store, and it knows you like certain types of products. And so offers targeted just for you show up in the aisle while you're shopping," Schaut said.
