Easter Weekend Forecast: Mainly Dry, But Rain Possible

BOSTON (CBS) - After a long winter I think many of us were looking forward to a fast start to spring or more importantly a warm start to spring.

Unfortunately, April in New England does not always cooperate. This is one of the last places in the country to fully switch seasons.

It has been a gloomy stretch lately, 10 of the last 11 days have had some rainfall in Boston and it's been mostly or completely cloudy.

This Easter Weekend may not be a whole lot better.

High pressure is sprawling out overhead for the next few days, which will mean a return to sunshine, but chilly conditions.

In fact, there could be a frosty start in the suburbs on Friday morning.

Our next storm system approaches on Saturday and rain is likely (again) by midday and continuing through the evening.

A trailing cold front will sweep through late Saturday night and this is the key to our Easter forecast.

This cold front will make its way through New England and then slow down and stall somewhere to our south.

This weather boundary will be the focus for additional showers on Sunday and early next week. At this point, I am leaning towards the front stalling just far enough to our south so that we should be mainly dry on Easter Sunday.

It looks mainly sunny with a high near 60 degrees. But we will need to keep a close eye on this weather boundary. Should it stall out along our south coast, we could be in for additional showers Sunday midday-afternoon.

Here is the current forecast breakdown for Easter Sunday:

Morning Mass: Increasing sunshine, temps in the 40s

Midday Egg Hunt: Partly sunny, 50-55

Late Afternoon Dinner: Intervals of sun and clouds, 55-60.
