Woman Diagnosed With Measles After Flight To RI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Measles, a highly contagious disease considered rare in the U.S., has turned up in the Ocean State.

Rhode Island's Department of Health announced Friday that a European woman in her 20s visiting the state has been diagnosed with the respiratory illness.

A physician diagnosed the woman, who was not identified, after she sought treatment for a fever and a rash. The Department of Health says the woman flew to New York from an unidentified country in Europe Tuesday, then drove to Rhode Island.

The department says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working to notify passengers who were on the woman's flight.

Children in the U.S. are routinely vaccinated against measles, which is caused by a virus, but vaccination is not common in many other countries.
