Mass. Labor Secretary Pushing For More Paid Sick Days For Workers

BOSTON (CBS) - Gov. Deval Patrick's labor secretary went to Beacon Hill Tuesday to stand with supporters of a paid sick leave bill.

Joanne Goldstein called the proposal that would allow workers to earn up to seven paid sick days a year a basic right.

"There's obviously benefits for the employee, who is able to take care of him or herself, as well as children or parents. Actually, I think it benefits the employer, because the employer is ensured of a work force that is healthy, focus, and productive," said

Bill Vernon of the National Federation of Independent Businesses said the paid sick days would put an impossible burden on small business, which has always found a way to deal with sickness without state interference.

"They know their employees. The employees know the boss, and they work it out," said Vernon.

The bill has 67 sponsors. It is currently in committee.
