Police Looking For Man Wanted In Salisbury Axe Attack

SALISBURY (CBS) – A man whacked another in the head with an axe at a park in Salisbury on Sunday.

Investigators believe 43-year-old Jay Larose, a homeless man, may have attacked 46-year-old Stephen Noyes with a hatchet on the Salisbury Point Ghost Trail during the afternoon.

Several parents at the park told authorities they saw Larose near the scene.

WBZ-TV's Jim Smith reports.

"I saw a gentleman come out from the park over here. He was wobbling, and it looked like he was drunk, homeless. He had a red shirt, black pants, black shoes, dark hair," said Rhonda McCarthy, a parent.

Police only confirmed that an attack of some type took place, and that the suspect was still on the loose. The victim was said to have suffered a significant head injury.

Noyes was able to speak with emergency crews at the scene. He was airlifted to Brigham and Women's Hospital as a precaution.

Police used dogs to search the woods and the trail, and they did recover bags of evidence. Some people said they saw the suspect later in the day hanging out next to a nearby Dunkin' Donuts.

The motive for the attack is not yet clear.

The district attorney's office said the victim is expected to survive.
