Fallen Mass. Soldiers Honored At Statehouse Ceremony

BOSTON (CBS) -- More than two dozen soldiers who gave their lives fighting for our country were honored Monday at the Massachusetts statehouse.

The families of 25 soldiers received the Medal of Liberty.

These medals represent a life lost on the battlefield and the sacrifices made by their families.

"They are the foundation upon which our services are built.  They are our military's greatest resource and source of strength," Maj. Gen. Joseph Carter of the National Guard said during the ceremony.

The Medal of Liberty is heart shaped, symbolic of the Purple Heart with a gold border. The center of the medal bears the gold star.
