Rescued MBTA Worker's Family Thanks Firefighters

BOSTON (CBS) - The family of an MBTA worker who became trapped in a deep manhole last week got the chance to say thanks on Wednesday to the firefighters who saved that worker's life.

Eddie Rowe was stuck in the 30-foot shaft for two hours before he was rescued.

He broke both of his legs. "I can't be more than thankful deep in my heart," Rowe's daughter Chelsea Rowe said. They did a good thing that day."

Last week, Rowe fell down a 30-foot shaft at the Charles/MGH MBTA Station.

At the height of the rescue, Boston Firefighters Ballin Wright and Gary Dardia were lowered into the shaft to hoist Rowe out.

On Wednesday, both firefighters received commendations, along with lots of hugs from the Rowe family.

"We feel very lucky. When we got the call at 3 a.m. Seattle-time, the worst things come to your mind," Rowe Sr. said. "As soon as we found out he was alive, we were just so pleased and thanked God."

Rowe suffered a number of injuries in the fall, including two broken legs.

He has been working for the MBTA for 28 years. He hopes one day to return to the job he loves.

"I can't say enough, there are no words," Rowe's mom Mary said.

Edward Rowe is recovering from his injuries at Mass General Hospital.
