Lawrence Mayor In SUV Crash – But Who’s to Blame?

LAWRENCE (CBS) – The mayor of Lawrence was in a minor car accident last week, but it’s still not clear who’s at fault.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Bernice Corpuz reports

Mayor William Lantigua was on Haverhill Street, when he reportedly said he was struck by a black Ford Explorer at the intersection on Prospect Street.

But the driver of the other vehicle, Ashmaly Pena, has a different story.

Her boyfriend, Mario Cruz told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 she was hit on the right side of her vehicle, but she didn’t stop.

Instead, she called him.

“She was crying and she was already hysterical,” he said.

“She’s like I just got into an accident and the vehicle’s behind me. I’m telling her to pull over and call the cops. But looking at the vehicle behind her, there’s a man, a guy in the vehicle. She was scared. She had both kids in the car. She was on the way to drop them off in day care so she could go to work.”

The mayor has not responded to a request for an interview. But his Chevrolet Avalance was parked outside City Hall Wednesday with its front grill looking uneven. Its front left bumper appeared to be scratched with black paint.
