Firefighter, Off-Duty Officer Hurt In Mattapan Crash

MATTAPAN (CBS) - A firefighter and an off-duty police officer were taken to the hospital on Tuesday after a crash at busy intersection in Mattapan.

State police investigating the crash determined a fire engine was responding to a call with its lights and siren on when an SUV collided with it at the corner of Marton and Harvard streets. The ladder truck then slammed into a light pole.

The drivers of the truck, Francis Tierney, 52, of Hyde Park, and the SUV, Darrell Vinson, 46, of Mattapan, were taken to local hospitals. The firefighter was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, while the officer was taken to Boston Medical Center. Authorities say Vinson had a serious leg injury and Tierney's injuries were minor.

The collision with the signal light pole disabled the traffic lights. Traffic was detoured for about three hours.
