BOSTON (CBS) –  WBZ-TV Viewer Bill in Harwich declared his curiosity. He asked, “Why are long-time fans just shrugging at the team’s mention?”

But have Red Sox fans grown complacent?

WBZ-TV’s David Wade couldn’t find one sox fan to say “yes”.

WBZ-TV’s David Wade reports

But the numbers don’t lie.

Last year’s ratings were down 36 % from the year before.

Add Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez to the mix, and NESN says ratings this spring training were up 108%.

Sports radio host Michael Felger says things are different. “Remember in ’07 when we tracked Dice-k Matsuzaka’s plane coming across the country, we were that nuts about baseball,” Felger reminded us. “I don’t know if we will ever get that back. I don’t know.”

The Red Sox start the season on the road Friday in Texas against the Rangers.

Dan Roche will be there with reports leading up to the season opener.

I do not see or hear of anyone being complacent. Perish such a silly thought!! Go to some other MLB cities, other than Boston, NY, Chicago and then talk about complacency. In some very nice cities, that I will leave unnamed, I’m not even sure the fans are aware they have a team.

With regards to rating being down last year, so were the stats for the Sox.
When they do well, more will watch. When they do poorly, people don’t care to watch.
There are a lot of Red Sox fans in the area that are not baseball fans. They did not watch the world series becuase their team was not in it.

  4. Cynic says:

I wonder if having to pay sixty bucks a month to watch them on TV has anything to do with it.

  5. ENUFF says:

Overpaid millionaires, I’d rather watch a Portland Seadog game. Can’t beat the ticket prices, parking or atmosphere.

  6. Cynic says:

Last year in Texas you could walk up and get good seats during the World Series on the day of the game.
