Proposal Could Delay RI Killer's Release

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island state senator is proposing a bill that would delay the expected release of the convicted killer of a 5-year-old to give officials more time to review his case.

Sen. Dawson T. Hodgson's proposal would immediately stop the awarding of good-time credits to prisoners serving sentences longer than 10 years.

Michael Woodmansee was sentenced to 40 years in 1983 for killing Jason Foreman of South Kingstown. Woodmansee is scheduled to be released in August. He is eligible for early release because he earned credits for good behavior.

Because Hodgson's bill would prevent Woodmansee from receiving any more credits, his release would be delayed by 40 days.

The state is now evaluating Woodmansee's mental health to determine whether he could be involuntarily committed to a mental health facility.
